The weather was perfect and the racing was just as good at the Cottage Grove Speedway on Independence Day for the Thursday July 4th affair. A full house was on hand in the grandstands as the DIRTcar Super Late Models, IMCA Modifieds, Street Stocks, and Hornets were on the evening’s card.

The DIRTcar Super Late Models were put to the ultimate test as they would participate in the first ever Firecracker 100. Jimmy Whisler of Otis was the early race leader of the one-hundred lap challenge putting his esterleemotel.com/Galluci’s Pizzeria/All Purpose Storage #28 Rocket to the front on the high side. As the race neared the quarter of the way complete Whisler had a quick Trevor Glaser trailing behind him.

On lap twenty-six Glaser, of Tangent, would put his Bayer Crop Science/Farmland Tractor Supply/Ground and Water #2 Trak-Star to the front after making a pass on Whisler for the lead. From there the only thing that would slow “T-Glaze” down was a fuel stop on lap fifty-five and a caution on lap seventy-five.

The decisive move to seal the victory for the six-time Willamette Speedway Late Model champion was carving his way through lapped traffic when the tail end of the field was clustered in front of him late in the race. Glaser would lead the rest of the way to win in his first visit to CGS in 2013 lapping all the way up to eighth place.

Jimmy Whisler would earn the runner-up spot followed by Tony Brakeall of Sodaville in his Sure Flow Concrete/Swing Construction/Art Plus Signs and Designs #13 Swartz in third. The top five was completed with Paul Culp of Springfield in the X-Factor Race Cars/All Pro Steel/Northwest Gallery #42 X-Factor in fourth while the Cold Springs Resorts/R.G. Remanufacturing/Driving Force Graphics #36 Rocket of Bend’s Shaun Mayea was fifth.

The IMCA Modified feature would see Braedon Hand of Cottage Grove have his way with the field. Hand, driving the D&D Automotive/Vintage Inn Family Restaurant #7S Pro, took the lead early and didn’t look back. Despite a handful of cautions, including two green-white-checkered restarts, the #7S would stay out in front for the rest of the way and Hand would earn his first feature win for car owner Jerry Severson from Medford.

Gus Cooper of Creswell was second in the Eastside Rollforming Specialties/Raceprint.com/BBQ Oil Barbeque Sauce #10 Pro while crossing the line behind him in third was the Serendipity Spa and Salon/West End Performance #23 Shaw of Cottage Grove’s Don Muth Jr. Mark Wauge from Jacksonville was fourth in the Skinner Autoplex/Meineke Car Care Center/Hoppes Construction #1M Loose Gruff followed by the Virgil Hanson Automotive Machine/BSB Manufacturing/James Gang Pizza #33C Shaw of Albany’s Craig Hanson in fifth.

T.J. Langan of Fall Creek made it back out to the Cottage Grove Speedway for the first time in two years. Piloting his familiar Taco Bell-Cottage Grove/Engine Research Development/DNL Truck Parts #85 Nova was briefly challenged, especially in the final laps, but would hold on to visit victory lane.

Daniel Ray of Springfield was second in his Pure Romance-Leslie Grimes/Brad’s Car Tunes/S.D.M.F. Race Cars #01 Camaro followed by Medford’s Jordan Braaten in the Don Braaten Painting/Hands On Detail/Mike Van Brunt’s Home and Building Maintenance #84 Regal in third. The balance of the top five would consist of the Stacy Graves Massage Therapy/Nathan Anderson Dentistry #00 Nova of Steve Begley from Eugene in fourth while fifth went to Darin Crooks of Cottage Grove in his Nathan Anderson Dentistry/Platinum Hair of Creswell #73 Nova.

Joe Maricle of Veneta was back in the winner’s circle despite being in a different car. The Ram Jack Foundation Repair #11 of Maricle earned his fourth win of the year after leading every single lap.

Finishing in the runner-up position was Dexter’s Taunton Swaim in the Randy Kuhl owned Big Dog Recycling/A-1 Auto Supply #17 entry while third went to the #7C of Josh Corley out of Veneta. The Material Fabrication/Meineke Car Care #28 of Cottage Grove driver Chris Pierce was fourth followed by the Small Town Treasures/Nichol’s Napa Auto Parts #89 of Jim Simmons also from Cottage Grove.
