In addition to the American Sprint Car Series-Northwest Region being in town on Friday July 4th the Late Model and Northwest Extreme Modifieds were on tap for support classes. A good crop of cars signed in on the registration sheets including twenty-one Late Models and five Northwest Extreme Modifieds.

At the start of the Late Model main event the All-In Property Investments/X-Factor Race Cars/Schram Brothers Excavating/Gullett Racing & Customs #111 X-Factor of Portland’s Joey Tanner would set the pace early. A yellow on lap one would bunch the field up and on the ensuing restart Rob Mayea of Bend would make a move to pass Tanner to get to the front. Mayea, in his J&S Farms/Cornett Racing Engines/Tim Logan Racing #37 Rocket, would be very quick once in the lead.

However on lap twelve restart Mayea would briefly go over the top of turns one and two giving the lead back to Tanner. But a yellow would come before a lap could be complete resulting in Mayea retaining the lead. A few more cautions would occur through the course of the race but the main event came down to the final circuit when Shaun Mayea, Rob’s nephew, put a bid in for the win.

Shaun Mayea, also of Bend, would roll around the bottom and actually had the advantage going into the final turns but Rob Mayea would keep his faith on the high side and had just enough momentum to beat his nephew at the wire by a mere .081 seconds. The victory would be Rob Mayea’s second of 2014 at CGS.

The Cold Springs Resorts/R.G. Remanufacturing/Superior Fuel Cells/Driving Force Graphics #36 Rocket of Shaun Mayea would be a respectable second followed by Mike Miller from Springfield in his X-Factor Race Cars/Renegade Race Fuels/Quality RV Repair/All Pro Steel #17M X-Factor in third. The rest of the top five finishers would be Trent Elliott out of La Pine in the La Pine Frontier Days/VisitCentralOregon.com/Sunriver Style/AAA Home Inspection #4E Victory Circle while crossing the wire in fifth was Pleasant Hill’s Blaine Taylor chauffeuring the My Boy’s Slate Fired Pizza/Taylor Restaurant Equipment/Mueller Commercial Services #18 MastersBilt.

In the Northwest Extreme Modified Eugene native David Schmidt was out to a great start leading in the initial laps in his EMS Truck Repair/Cindy Sew It/Oregon Concealed Training/Hunter Brake & Alignment #9 Pro. On lap five though Braedon Hand from Cottage Grove would find a way to the front on lap five. Hand would lead the rest of the distance to win his first career Northwest Extreme Modified main event for the Todd’s Auto Body/D&D Automotive/KNND 1400 AM/Vintage Inn Family Restaurant #5 Shaw by S.D.M.F. team.

Brandon Potter out of St. Helens was second in his Hope House/Ri Ky Roofing and Sheetmetal/Kaptain’s Kraft Custom T-Shirts #11 Pro but missed the scales so unfortunately would result in a disqualification. Second place would officially go to David Schmidt followed by Cottage Grove’s Jimmy Owen in the Eagle Racing Graphics/Dan Martin Excavating/Dirt Tracking/Bonnichson Repair #27 machine in third. Crow’s Scott Akin would cross the stripe in fourth in his #54 Monster to complete the finishing order.
