The support class for the Cottage Grove Speedway on Independence Day, Saturday July 4th, was the IMCA Sport Mods. The main event was an action packed feature with a couple of lead changes and a smashing finish.

Jimmy Owen of Cottage Grove would seize the lead on the start in the main event. Owen, in his Steelhouse Metal Roofing Supply/Quality RV Repair/Devine Continuous Gutters/Bonnichson Auto Repair/Green Day Garden Center #38 machine, was very fast but Gene Ashley started to reel him in.

Gene Ashley would eventually overtake Owen on lap four. Two cautions would occur, after Ashley was in first place, and kept the field bunched up. Jimmy Owen tried one last time to get the lead and almost got it but Ashley would beat him out on the final corner of the final lap to win by 0.058 seconds. It would be the fourth win of the season for the Furniture Options/A-1 Auto Supply/Ashley Family Racing #85 machine.

Jimmy Owen was second followed by the A-1 Auto Supply/Furniture Options/Kirk Racing #73 Harris of Tyler Smith from Cottage Grove in third. Crow's Scott Akin would finish in fourth in his Akin Racing #54 Monster while the Trissell Floor Covering/Bryke Racing #51 entry of Roy Kirk Jr. of Marcola was fifth.

Cottage Grove Speedway is back in action for Friday July 10th and Saturday the 11th for the Mark Howard Memorial Cottage Grove Speedway Modified Nationals. Friday will feature IMCA Modifieds and both the local Late Models as well as the Northwest Extreme Late Model Series. The same classes will be racing on Saturday except the Clark Printing Extreme Sprints will also be in attendance.

Admission prices both nights are Adults $13.00, Juniors/Seniors/Military $10.00, Youths (Ages 6-12) $5.00, and 5 & Under FREE. Times for each race are Pit Gates open at 2:00 PM, Front Gates 4:00, Qualifying 5:30, and Racing begins right around 6:45.
