Dills, Mayden, Braaten, And Maricle Winners At CGS Kids Night

Cottage Grove, Oregon- Despite some incredibly warm weather Cottage Grove Speedway would host Kids Night on Saturday June 4th. Over twenty bicycles were donated to be given away during the intermission to some very lucky children. Four classes were on the card including the Clark Printing Extreme Sprints, IMCA Modifieds, IMCA Sport Mods, and Quality RV Repair Hornets.

In the Clark Printing Extreme Sprints it would be Fall Creek veteran Mike Griffith, in his Griffith Family Racing #21 Gambler, leading the opening lap. Griffith would be passed on lap two by Sutherlin’s Cooper Desbiens. Desbiens, in his J.H. Desbiens Construction/Budget Lumber/Lithia Auto Body/Oregon Tool & Supply #4D Maxim, set a rapid pace and looked to be on his way to victory lane. However, on lap seventeen Cottage Grove pilot Patrick Dill would make the pass on Desbiens. Dills would remain in the lead the rest of the way to put his Cedric Ross Hayden for Oregon State Representative/M.D. Yearous Logging/Oregon Research Consultants/Jacob Daniels Attorney at Law #5D KPC in victory lane.

Ricky Ashley, from Thurston, would place the Todd’s Auto Body/Clark Printing/Herz Precision Parts/Hedge Carter Gutter Service #85 Maxim in second followed by Cooper Desbiens in third. Anderson, California teenager Chelsea Blevins was fourth in her BC Motorsports/Ron Peters Cabinets #1B entry while the Airport Chevrolet/Summit Forests Inc./Triple R Motorsports #25S XXX, of Medford youngster Camden Robustelli, got fifth.

Dave Hibbard, from Medford, was fast time of the night in his Hansen & Sons Trucking/Outlaw Powdercoating/Dave’s Carpet & Vinyl Liquidators/Tangible Real Estate Investment #3 Zeitler. Ricky Ashley was victorious in the Dot’s Trophy Shop Trophy Dash while heat race winners were Hibbard and Patrick Dills.

Ryan Baker was off to a great start in the IMCA Modified main event. The Coquille native, in his Cam Cat Tractor/Blaylock Inc./Wadsworth Garbage Service #18R Shaw, would remain in the lead till lap nine after a restart. The driver overtaking Baker was Cottage Gorve’s Curtis Towns, in the Superior Fuel Cells/West End Performance/BSB Manufacturing/IBEW Local 280/Slicker Graphics of Ohio #24 Superior. Towns would unfortunately get collected in a wreck while dealing with lapped traffic on the fourteenth circuit.

This would give the lead to the Furniture Options/A-1 Auto Supply/Mackin Street Customs & RV’s/Absolute Air & Auto Repair #84 Shaw of Eric Ashley from Jasper. Ashley would pace the field until Springfield’s Jake Mayden made the move to get around him. Mayden would hold back Ashley to put his Hoppes Motorsports/Courtney Auto Repair/Eugene Gutter Service/Quality RV Repair #5M Dirt Works in the winner’s circle for the first time this year.

Eric Ashley was a respectable second followed by Kinzer Cox of Cottage Grove, in the C.J. Fire Protection/Robert Howell Logging/Jerry Robinette Performance Carburetors/BC Motorsports #1K Loose Gruff, in third. The Point S Springfield Tire Factory/KMC Wheels/Pyramid Brewing/Fastenal #11 X-Factor, of Steven Sturdevant from Springfield, was fourth and Cottage Grove chauffeur Tyler Smith crossed the line in his DeWalt Racing/S&L Photography/Bam Carbide/Carrothers Automotive Machine #73 Hassey fifth.

Kinzer Cox was the quickest driver in time trials and Steven Sturdevant got the job done in the Dot’s Trophy Shop Trophy Dash. Cottage Grove drivers Kreg Britton, piloting the Eugene Mortgage Brokers/Mickey’s Affordable Auto Sales/Commonwealth Financial Network/Dot’s Trophy Shop #77 X-Factor, and Justin Ryker, in the Jimmy Owen owned Steelhouse Metal Roofing Supply/West End Performance/Todd’s Auto Body/Auto Service Express #38 entry, were the two heat race winners.

Andrew Mathers of Eugene was the pace setter in the opening legs of the IMCA Sport Mod feature. Mathers, in his Kiwi Fab Metal Fabrication/Hair by Char/Alpha Towin #7M D&M, would remain in the front of the field until lap eight. Central Point’s Jorddon Braaten would be the new leader and dominated the rest of the way. Braaten was first to cross the line to capture his fourth victory of the season at Cottage Grove in his Quench & Drench Car Wash/Miller Paint Company/Advanced Door & Hardware/Schaeffer’s Racing Oil #84 Dirt Works.

The Brad’s Car Tunes/Quality RV Repair/D&L Truck Parts/MTD Motorsports #01 Harris, of Springfield’s Daniel Ray, was second with Jayson Nelson, also out of Springfield and the driver of the Quality RV Repair/Point S Springfield Tire Factory/Fastenal/Matco Tools #51N Harris, in third. Andrew Mathers got fourth and the Ashley Family Racing #85 machine of Jasper’s Gene Ashley completed the top five finishers in fifth.

Jorddon Braaten had a clean sweep of the evening’s events by setting fast time, winning the Dot’s Trophy Shop Trophy Dash, and was also victorious in the heat race. Andrew Mathers also was a heat race winner.

K.C. Scott of Springfield got the early race lead in the Quality RV Repair Hornet feature. The Quantum Mechanics/Quality RV Repair/Big B Tires #30 Mazda Protégé, of Scott, would lead until lap six after slowing down on a restart. The driver to take over the top place position was Veneta hot shoe Joe Maricle. Maricle, in the Royal Refuse Service/More of Everything Racing Collectables #11 entry, would stay in the spot the rest of the distance to win his third straight feature.

The Holland’s Automotive/Checkered Flag Asphalt Paving & Sealcoating #16A Toyota Tercel, of Oregon City’s Danny Asher, was the runner-up while grabbing third was K.C. Scott. Goshen youngster Brandon Norton pulled off a great fourth place run in his A-1 Auto Supply/Ashley Family Racing #79 Toyota Corola while fifth would belong to the Bigg Dogg Recycling/Marvin Smith Auto Repair/Body Works Salon #89 Honda Prelude of Cottage Grove’s Jim Simmons.

K.C. Scott was quick time and the winner of the Dot’s Trophy Shop Trophy Dash would be Eugene driver James Simmons in the It Works By Kayla Simmons/A+ Towing/This Little Light Of Mine Photography #16 machine. Danny Asher and James Simmons were the two heat race winners.

Cottage Grove Speedway begins a marathon run of races with four events scheduled over a period of five days. It all starts with Kage Kart action on Friday June 10th for their third race of the season. For the Kart races General Admission is FREE and Pit Passes are $10.00 and Car and Driver fees will be $35.00. The Pit Gate will open up around 4:00 PM and the Pit Meeting is at 6:00 PM with Hot Laps and Racing to follow.

Saturday June 11th will see racing return to the ¼-mile with a full card for the Prelude to the Wallbanger. Street Stocks, Clark Printing Extreme Sprints, Late Models, IMCA Sport Mods, Quality RV Repair Hornets, and Dwarf Cars are all on tap for a terrific night of action. Tickets are Adults $13.00, Juniors/Seniors $10.00, Youth (6-12) - $5.00, Family Pass $30.00, and Children 5 or under are FREE. As will happen all year long in honor of our 60th Anniversary the 60th fan through the Front Gate gets in for FREE.
Then on Monday June 13th and Tuesday the 14th the Wild West Modified Shootout returns for two nights of action. It will feature some of the best IMCA Modified drivers on the planet taking on the local and regional stars. Tickets are $8.00 and Kids (5 and Under) get in for FREE.
