Cottage Grove, Oregon- Cottage Grove Speedway would host their second $5.00 Fast Friday of the 2016 season on Friday June 24th. Despite only two classes on the card it would be a decent car count with nearly thirty IMCA Modifieds showing up. The other division in competition was the Quality RV Repair Hornets.

Brian Thompson of Sweet Home would show the way early in the IMCA Modified feature. Thompson, in his Crockers Cars/Buzz Mitchell Farms/Brownsville Calf Ranch/Burke Logging #44T NexGen, blazed the trail in the first handful of laps but was never able to get out to a large lead due to several cautions in the first six laps. Shortly after the sixth lap restart Thompson would be overtaken by Corbett’s Collen Winebarger.

Winebarger would maintain the top position for much of the race despite several more caution flags being waved. The Discount Race Car Parts/Crockers Cars/GO Plumbing & Heating/Frisbie Motorsports #S Victory Circle, of Winebarger, would briefly lose the lead on lap twenty-three only for the yellow to come back out before the lap would be complete. Winebarger would stay in front after the final restart and hold on to win his second race at Cottage Grove in 2016.

The Rodgers Racing Engines/Hoppes Motorsports/Payroll Specialties Inc./Willamette Valley Bank #1M PCD, of Jacksonville’s Mark Wauge, would be a close second place followed by Curtis Towns, from Cottage Grove in Superior Fuel Cells/West End Performance/BSB Manufacturing/IBEW Local 280 #24 Superior, in third. Cottage Grove’s Braedon Hand, driving the 1400 KNND AM/D&D Automotive/Vintage Inn Family Restaurant/Oregon Taxi #13 Shaw, got fourth and Eric Ashley of Jasper completed the top five, in fifth, piloting his Mackin Street Customs & RV’s/Absolute Air & Auto Repair/Furniture Options/Ashley Family Racing #84 Shaw.

Mark Wauge was fast time of the night and won the Dot’s Trophy Shop Trophy Dash. Heat race winners were the Point S Springfield Tire Factory/KMC Wheels/Pyramid Brewery/Fastenal #11 X-Factor of Springfield’s Steven Sturdevant, Collen Winebarger, and Albany native Craig Hanson in his Virgil Hanson Automotive Machine/Best Pots Inc./A&B Septic/Superior Fuel Cells #33C Victory Circle.

The Quality RV Repair Hornets would put on an entertaining main event. Marcel Forte would pace the field for the majority of the distance. The Junction City driver, in his Junction City Muffler Shop/Twisted Bit Arena/Snap On Tools/J&M Racing #23F entry, would build a decent size lead until a caution on lap sixteen bunched the field up. On the ensuing restart Joe Maricle, from Veneta, was able to track down Forte for the lead and made the pass on lap eighteen. Maricle would hold on at the line to win his fourth race of the season. Something to note is that earlier in the race the More of Everything Racing Collectibles/Royal Refuse Service #11 machine, of Maricle, had to start dead last after getting involved in an incident on lap one.

The Junction City Muffler Shop/J&M Racing #7C Nissan 200SX, of Westfir chauffeur Josh Corley, claimed second with K.C. Scott of Springfield placing his Quantum Mechanics/Big B Tire/Quality RV Repair #30 Mazda Protégé in third. The balance of the top five would consist of Marcel Forte, in fourth, and the Edge Motorsports/Tire Sport/Green Electric #65 Volkswagen Golf, of Brad Moffett from Veneta, in fifth.

Joe Maricle would set fast time of the night and won the Dot’s Trophy Shop Trophy Dash. Maricle and Josh Corley were the heat winners. It would also be a clean sweep of the evening’s events for Maricle.
