Championship Night #1 Race Recap

4 classes of cars showed up Saturday night to collect whatever final points they needed to finish out the point season at Cottage Grove. KC Scott and Curtis Towns had already secured the Quality RV Hornet and Late Model Championships. Kyle Miller needed just a few more points to clinch the 360 title. The street stocks however would come all the way down to the Main Event before Evan Britton could say he was the 2017 champ. The champions weren’t the only thing being decided though, there was a pit area full of drivers looking to pick up some wins!
The Quality RV Hornet class kicked the night off with a quick time of 18.077 set by Joe Maricle. Rich Dickinson and Graig Osborne won the 2 James Heating & Air Conditioning Heat Races putting them in the 3rd row for the main event while Mike Swaim and Joe Maricle shared the front row. Maricle got the lead early and looked as though he would be the night’s winner until lap 14 when Maricle slowed significantly and the new battle for the lead ensued between Swaim and Eric Ashley. On lap 20 Swaim picked up the win over Ashley. 2017 champion KC Scott was 3rd, Maricle 4th, and Tiffany Towns rounded out the top 5. Swaim also won the Dot’s Trophy Shop Dash.
Andrew Langan set quick time for the Street Stock class with a 15.688 and won the Dot’s Trophy Shop Dash. James Heating and Air Conditioning Heat Races were won by Evan Britton and Langan as he set his sights on a clean sweep for the night. It wasn’t going to be easy though as the invert would put Britton and Langan starting in the 3rd row for the main event. A couple of new to Cottage Grove drivers, Bill Allison and RC Levin shared the front row. Levin led lap one before Jody Tanner went from 4th to the lead. By lap 4 Langan had taken the top spot and led the rest of the way with a hard charge behind him by Britton who finished 2nd and became the 2017 champion. Ray Bloom was 3rd, Tanner 4th, and Garrett Barth finished 5th.
Late Model quick time was set by Jimmy Whisler with a 13.264. Chuck Christian got the Dot’s Trophy Shop Dash win and Whisler and Tom Lauson grabbed the James Heating and Air Conditioning Heat Race wins. Christian paced the field outside of Randy Barley to the green flag and Christian got the early lead. Kye Frick took it over until lap 10 when Whisler made it to the front and continued on to pick up the win over Frick, Blaine Taylor, Lauson and 2017 Late Model Champion, Curtis Towns.
A solid field of 360 Sprints were on hand including some guys traveling from Washington down to join the field. Kyle Miller set quick time with a 11.513. Garen Linder grabbed the Dot’s Trophy Shop Dash win. James Heating & Air Conditioning Heat Race wins went to Colin Baker and Tyler Thompson. Jayme Barnes and Nate Morelock paced the field of cars to the green flag and Barnes shot to the lead. It quickly became a battle of the 22’s as Barnes led with Linder close behind. A red flag on lap 7 sent Morelock crashing into the wall and the point leader, Kyle Miller into the work area. Miller was able to make it back out but had significant nose wing damage. The race resumed and Linder took the lead over Barnes who a few laps later came to a stop and retired to the pits becoming laps down before he could make it back out to finish the race. It was looking to be a curse of cars running 2nd when Tyler Thompson gave up his 2nd place run to a blown motor giving it Bricen James, on lap 16 James took a very hard hit to the wall and the red flag came out once again. The field lined back up and Linder was a man on a mission as he dominated the final 14 laps picking up his 2nd trophy of the night over Gregory Hamilton, Jake Waddell, Kyle Miller, and Ricky Ashley.
The night wasn’t quite over yet! There were still 2 very important races to run, the powder puff shows! Two very impressive powder puff races were won by Abby Farris and Stacy Bloom. And all we can say is boys hold onto your rides cuz these girls are coming for them!!
Cottage Grove Speedway will be back in action Friday, September 15th with Kage Karts and Saturday September 16th we will crown Todd’s Auto Body Sprint, Mohawk Metal Modified, and IMCA Sportmod champions as well as the DEMO DERBY!!
