Cottage Grove, Oregon- Cottage Grove Speedway was back in action, after a weekend off, on Friday, August 23rd. The race marked the first of two nights of the 2019 Mark Howard Memorial Modified Nationals. Only two divisions were in action including the Mohawk Metal IMCA Modifieds and IMCA Sport Mods.

In the Mohawk Metal IMCA Modified feature, Jake Mayden showed a lot of strength. The Springfield chauffeur took the initial lead and had cautions play in his favor. It would put pressure on Mayden on restarts, but he managed to master every one of them and remain upfront.

A total of six cautions were brought out in the first fourteen laps. On the final restart Redmond’s Mark Carrell was able to slip underneath and past Mayden for the lead out of turn two. The race stayed green for the rest of the distance with 2016 Mod Nationals winner Mark Carrell picking up his second win of 2019 at CGS.

Jake Mayden finished a noble second over third finishing Nick Trenchard, from Klamath Falls and racing for car owners Rich and Nikki Biehn. Defending Mod Nationals winner Collen Winebarger, from Corbett, got fourth while Albany’s Bricen James placed fifth.

Eugene veteran Jesse Williamson was quickest in qualifying for car owner Randy Martin. Getting heat race wins were Albany’s Dustin Cady, Bricen James, Collen Winebarger, Coburg driver Kevin Williamson, Curtis Towns of Cottage Grove, and Creswell pilot Gus Cooper. Two B Main were run with Jesse Williamson and Matthew Drager, of Albany, picking up wins.

Once all of the action was complete, the track hosted a twenty-five lap Race of Champions event. Grey Ferrando, from Stayton, took care of business after seizing the lead and pacing the field the entire distance. The only thing to slow him down was the three stoppages throughout the race. It is Ferrando’s first career Race of Champions victory.

In the IMCA Sport Mod main, Isaac Sanders set the tone early. The Brookings native remained in the top spot until getting passed, shortly after a restart, on lap five. Jorddon Braaten was the man that happened to step up the plate and overtake Sanders.

Braaten remained in the lead for the balance of the distance. But it was no walk in the park. The field witnessed six yellow flag incidents which kept the competition bunched up together and took out the possibility of heavy lapped traffic. It was Braaten’s third win of the current campaign at “The Grove.”

Corbett’s Skyler Winebarger was the runner-up while Brandon Wilson, from Medford, ended his evening in third. Medford’s Braxton Possinger came out of the B Main to earn fourth over fifth finishing David Schmidt, of Roseburg.

Jorddon Braaten was the quickest driver in qualifying. Heat race winners included Skyler Winebarger, Braaten, Springfield’s Daniel Ray, and Travis Pruitt of Molalla. Braxton Possinger won the consolation feature.

Cottage Grove Speedway returns to racing on Saturday, August 24th for the finale of the 2019 Mark Howard Memorial Modified Nationals. Not only will the Mohawk Metal IMCA Modifieds and IMCA Sport Mods return but so will the 360 Sprints. The Sprints will battle it out for $3000.00 to win.
