Despite some showers earlier in the day the Cottage Grove Speedway was able to complete all of the scheduled events on Saturday August 30th. It would be the first night of the King Of The West Kage Kart event and the first time the prestigious race has been held at CGS. Good car counts were on tap as well as some great racing action.

Making her Cottage Grove Speedway debut Kiersten Hibbard of Medford would seize the lead on the opening lap in the Pee Wee main event in her C&H Motorsports/Dave’s Carpet & Liquidators/Tangible Real Estate Investments #48G QRC. Hibbard would lose the lead around lap three though to fellow Medford pilot Trevor Grimes. Grimes would lead the remainder of the distance to pick up the feature win in the Grimes Racing #100 RFC.

Coos Bay’s Jayden Trupp was second in his Dave Foote Motorsports/Nexdor Tobacco & More/Trupp Family Race Team #72 QRC entry followed by Kiersten Hibbard. The Froggy’s Towing/Bigg Dogg Recycling/Opie Motorsports #28J QRC of Joshua Baker from Eugene was fourth and in fifth Nikolas Lundquist of Cottage Grove in his Horner’s Inc. #88 QRC.

In 5HP action Isaac Stere from Cottage Grove would lead the entire distance. Stere would keep back all challengers, even in the final circuits, to collect his first win of the 2014 for him and the Stere Racing #32S QRC team.

Austin Sause, also of Cottage Grove, was a close second in his Wheeless Trailer Sales/Cooper’s Pest Control/Umpqua Survival/Central Coast Vacuums #7 QRC while the Riggs Racing #32R Hubbard of Eugene’s Seth Riggs crossed the wire in third. Ashleigh Strain, making the long haul from Brookings, would place fourth in her Bauer Auto Body/Eugene Sky Divers/DsignZ Signs & Graphics/Freeman Rock #32A QRC and in fifth would be Abby Ellison of Roseburg in the Gibson Taxidermy/Seven Feathers Casino/HighLine Image & Design #8A QRC.

Kyle Roles, out of Lebanon, would lead every single lap of the 125cc main event to collect his third win of the campaign at CGS. The Knothole Market/Big Sky Landscaping/Scofield Karts & Parts/Clayton’s Cornwell Tools #02 QRC, of Roles, would keep back a hard charging Conner Hanson. Creswell’s Conner Hanson was second in his Hanson Contract Cutting/SKS Racing/BC Motorsports/DT Motorsports/Horner’s Inc. #55H QRC followed by the Destiney Smith Motorsport #18S QRC of Destiney Smith from Sutherlin in third.

Bailey Hibbard of Medford was on a mission in 250cc action. Hibbard, in the C&H Motorsports/Dave’s Carpet & Liquidators/Tangible Real Estate Investments #1 QRC, would dominate the main event and find the winner’s circle for the third time in 2014.

A.J. Harbaugh from McKenzie Bridge was the runner-up in his RFC Karts/Rocket Designs/Redline Racing/Double R Powdercoating #18H RFC and in third the Goss Family Racing #21 SKE of Eugene’s Alex Goss. The rest of the top five would consist of Cottage Grove native Michael Cooper, driving for Kart owner Steven Horner in the Horner’s Inc. #10H QRC, coming home fourth and the Goss Family Racing #22 QRC of Eugene’s Tyler Goss in fifth.

Last but not least the Open Kage main event would see some great racing. Despite several cautions in the first few laps a long green flag run would be produced. Matt Moberly of Central Point was the early race leader in his Reser’s Fine Foods/RFC Karts #19 RFC. Moberly would lose the lead to David Lyons of Roseburg, in the Independent Motor Rebuilders/Grandma Enterprises/Puppy Love Treats/HighLine Image & Design #98 QRC, but the two would collide exiting turn four. The result would leave Lyons with a flat right rear tire and Moberly retaining the lead.

As the lap count continued to get worked Moberly would lose the lead with less than ten laps remaining. Overtaking the top spot was Cottage Grove’s Jake Ferguson in his Comfort Suites of Salem/Quantum Chassis/Dragonflydecals.com #22J QRC machine. Ferguson looked to be the mount to beat but as lapped traffic came into the picture it definitely made things interesting.

Ferguson, Moberly, and Winston teenager Kyle Alberding would battle for the lead for several laps including making it three-wide on a couple of occasions. Ferguson would lead the white flag lap only to get collected with a lapped car on the final corner. Kyle Alberding would lead the last forty or so feet and win his first race at CGS in 2014 in the Eoff Electric Supply/WSK Machine #76 QRC.

Matt Moberly was a respectable second while in the third would be the Whit-Log Trailers/Oregon Tool & Supply/Mufflers And More #8S QRC of Roseburg’s Brady Senger. The balance of the top five would be made up of Spencer Desbiens from Dallas in his Desbiens Racing #2D QRC in fourth and Lebanon native Austin Jones in fifth piloting his Burke’s Metal Recycling/The Knothole Market #7 QRC.

The second night of the 2014 King Of The West Kage Kart race will start a little bit earlier on Sunday August 31st. Pill Draw will close at 3:45 PM and the Pit Meeting will be held at 4:00 PM with Hot Laps and Racing to follow. As always for Kart events General Admission is FREE.
