Cottage Grove, Oregon- Cottage Grove Speedway would play host to the Saturday, July 30th Froggy 44. The event was run in honor of the late Melvin Walker and is the biggest race of the season for the Quality RV Repair Hornets. The Clark Printing Extreme Sprints were also in the house and competing for an increased purse with the winner taking home $1,000.00. Also on the card were the Late Models and IMCA Sport Mods.

The Froggy 44 would be a forty-four lap affair for the Quality RV Repair Hornets and is no doubt the longest race they will run for the rest of the year. Westfir’s Josh Corley got out to the front and paced the field for some time. Corley would lose the lead on lap eighteen.

Taking over for Josh Corley was Springfield driver Daniel Ray but he would be passed on lap twenty-two by K.C. Scott. Scott, also out of Springfield, would keep the competition behind him for a few laps util the twenty-fourth circuit. Sutherlin native Bernie Bryant looked to be the class of the field for the second half of the race.

Bryant seized an opportunity to get to the front on lap twenty-four and remain there until the lap thirty-six. Chris Pierce would get around Bryant and held on the rest of the way to win the 2016 Froggy 44. It was also the Cottage Grove chauffeur's first race of the season.

Bernie Bryant was second followed by K.C. Scott in third. Finishing fourth was Junction City’s Marcel Forte and Mike Swaim of Dexter completed the top five, in fifth.

Ricky Ashley was the car to beat in the first few laps of the Clark Printing Extreme Sprint main event. Ashley, out of Thurston, led for five laps before Dave Hibbard made it around him on the sixth circuit. Hibbard, out of Medford, stayed in first place the rest of the distance to win his second race of the year.

Ricky Ashley was the runner-up Eugene’s Raquel Ivie got third. Patrick Dills, of Cottage Grove, crossed the wire in fourth while Harrisburg teenager Tyler Thompson finished fifth.

Ron Brewster would have an incredibly successful night in the Late Models. The Redmond veteran dominated the race and was in the first place on every single lap. It marked the third occasion that Brewster has won at CGS in 2016.

Pleasant Hill’s Blaine Taylor got second and behind him, in third place, would be Chuck Christian of Eugene. Fellow Eugene racer David Schmidt was fourth and Lebanon’s Josh Sim got fifth.

Last but not least were the IMCA Sport Mods. Daniel Ray had a firm grip on the top spot. Ray, doing double duty on the weekend, obtained the coveted position on lap six and never gave it back. It would be the first time Daniel Ray has won a Sport Mod event at “The Grove”.

Bobby McHargue, out of Winston, would finish an impressive second and Eugene’s Andrew Mathers was third. Brandon Letsom, of Marcola, ended the night fourth and behind, in fifth, was Chris Frisbie of Vancouver, Washington.

Cottage Grove Speedway is next in action on Friday, August 5th for the return of the Kage Karts. Then Saturday, the 6th will be Fan Appreciation Night. This is where all the cars in the pits come out on the front stretch and sign autographs and hand out pictures. And to show appreciation to our valued fans CGS is offering a specially priced $10.00 tickets for General Admission (Age 13+). Classes in action include the Clark Printing Extreme Sprints, IMCA Modifieds, Late Models, IMCA Sport Mods, and the Quality RV Repair Hornets.
