Cottage Grove, Oregon- Night one of the 2018 Logger’s Cup would be on Friday, August 10th, at Cottage Grove Speedway. Three classes were in attendance for the evening with Late Models, Mohawk Metal IMCA Modifieds, and IMCA Sport Mods.

In the Late Model main event Thomas Hunziker, from Bend, blazed the trail for the first five circuits. Joey Tanner, of Portland and running for car owner Darren Coffell, took control on lap six before being passed shortly afterwards by Preston Luckman. Luckman, from Coos Bay, would unfortunately be involved in an incident which put him to the back of the field.

La Pine’s Trent Elliott inherited the top spot and remained there only to have Collen Winebarger get to the front. Winebarger, chauffeuring for Jerry Schram, lead the pack from lap fourteen to the checkered to win his first Late Model victory of the 2018 campaign at CGS.

In Mohawk Metal IMCA Modified competition there would be four different leaders in the first eight laps. Cottage Grove’s Evan Britton paced the parade on lap one while the second circuit went to Eugene veteran Paul Rea. Stayton driver Grey Ferrando got around Rea, on lap four, but was passed on the eighth time around the ¼-mile by Dustin Cady, from Albany.

Ferrando would make it back around Cady on the following lap and remained there for some time. Collen Winebarger navigated his was past Ferrando at the mid-point of the feature and paced the field the remainder of the distance to win two main events in the same night and scored his third IMCA Modified win at Cottage Grove Speedway this year.

Lastly, in the IMCA Sport Mod ranks Matt Sanders was the class of the field. The Brookings native controlled the coveted top spot the entire time, with the exception of lap fourteen when he was briefly passed by Central Point’s Jorddon Braaten. Sanders would finally win his first race of the season at “the Grove”.

The Logger’s Cup returns on Saturday, August 11th, at Cottage Grove Speedway. Classes in competition include the Late Models, Mohawk Metal IMCA Modifieds, Quality RV Repair Hornets, and Super Sports. For more information log on to www.cottagegrovespeedway.com.
